CANYONING IN MADEIRA WITH KIDS (YES, FROM AGE 8)

Kid on a family canyoning tour with EPIC Madeira

The best holiday stories never start with “so, we were by the pool…”. 😎

They start with a helmet, a rope and a kid who suddenly refuses to go home. Canyoning in Madeira with kids is absolutely a thing, and it might just be the proudest morning of your trip.

So, be honest: who’s going first, you or them? 🤘

How old do kids need to be to go canyoning in Madeira?

Kids can join Beginner Canyoning and Coasteering from age 8, and Intermediate Canyoning from age 12. There’s no minimum height or weight, just the age, and every kid comes with an adult (yes, that’s you 😉).

One TripAdvisor review says it better than we could: “Perfect for my two teenagers who were beginners and wanted to try canyoning.” 🥰

Canyoning or coasteering: which is better for a family?

Both start at age 8, so it comes down to one question: mountains or sea? 🌿🌊

Beginner Canyoning (8+) follows a mountain river, with rappels down waterfalls and jumps that are always optional. Coasteering (8+) plays along the coast with climbing, jumps and snorkelling, snorkel gear included.

Mountains and waterfalls? Canyoning. Sea and snorkelling? Coasteering. Can’t decide? Do both and let the kids rank them. 😅

Is it safe for kids? (And what if they can’t swim?)

Kids go out with EPIC guides and certified technical gear, with insurance and licences included. The rule is a maximum of 6 participants per guide, and our usual groups of 8 to 10 go with two guides.

Jumps are optional in canyoning, and there’s always another way down. In coasteering, we adapt to each kid’s comfort level. 🤙

Not a swimmer? Kids who can’t swim can still go canyoning: tell us in advance and we’ll provide a lifejacket when needed. For coasteering, give us a heads-up too, and there’s a lifejacket plus the guides close by. 💦

We take the canyon seriously, so you can spend the day laughing. Anything else on your mind? Our FAQ has the answers.

What should kids bring and wear?

Kids only need two things: swimwear (under the wetsuit) and a towel. We bring the rest, in kids’ sizes too: wetsuit, canyoning shoes, neoprene socks, helmet, harness and a lifejacket when needed.

Coming in winter? Pack a jacket or a few layers for the mountain. Glasses or contact lenses are fine, just let the guides know. 👓

Special diet? Tell us when you book. The energy bar or chocolate is on us, and somehow it always tastes better halfway down a canyon. 🍫

How does a family day with EPIC work?

Count on about 5 hours in total, with 2h00–2h30 in the canyon (or on the coast). Pickup from your hotel or Airbnb in Funchal or Caniço is included; other areas on request (extra cost may apply).

Driving yourselves? Use the code NoTransfer for 15% off and meet us at the activity spot. 🚐

Free photos are included, so phones stay dry and parents stay in the moment. 📸

After booking you’ll get two emails: the automatic confirmation, then one from our team with the meeting point, time and GPS.

Prefer to keep it in the family? You can book a private tour, just ask. Direct bookings get a full refund up to 24 hours before.

Need a slower day after all that adrenaline? Try our waterfall levada walk in Ponta do Sol. 🌿
