FEED YOUR CONFIDENCE: EPIC WATERFALL ABSEIL AT RIBEIRA FUNDA

Overhead view of a canyoner on an orange rope abseiling under a waterfall in Ribeira Funda, Madeira

If you feed your confidence, you’ll starve your fear. Hungry for adventure? 🤘

That orange rope. That rush of white water. That moment when your feet leave the rock and you’re hanging under a Madeira waterfall — that’s the feeling. This shot from Ribeira Funda is pure EPIC energy: an overhead view of a canyoner abseiling (rappelling) straight into the spray while the canyon walls glow green with moss and ferns.

What is canyoning in Madeira?

Canyoning (also called canyoneering or barranquismo) means travelling down a mountain river canyon — walking, sliding, swimming and abseiling beside waterfalls. On Madeira Island you do it on volcanic rock, often wrapped in lush forest, with crystal-clear pools waiting at the bottom. It’s not a theme-park ride. It’s real nature, real rope skills, and a real grin when you look back up at the drop you just sent.

A Madeira waterfall abseil looks intimidating from the top — and that’s okay. Fear shows up. Confidence is what you feed instead. Your guide sets the rope, checks your harness, talks you through every step, and stays with you until your feet find solid rock again. You don’t have to pretend you’re fearless. You just have to take the next step.

Is canyoning in Madeira okay if I’m nervous?

Yes — especially when you start at the right level with certified guides and proper gear. You do not need prior experience for our beginner canyoning tours (ages 8+). We bring the wetsuit, helmet, harness, canyoning shoes and ropes, plus a full safety briefing before you enter the canyon. Jumps are usually optional. Your guide picks the route for the weather, water level and your group.

Ready for bigger drops and more flow? Intermediate canyoning (ages 12+) steps things up when you (or your guide) feel you’re ready. Places like Ribeira Funda — short approach, photogenic walls, waterfall rappels that finish with Atlantic vibes nearby — are the kind of playground that rewards trust in the rope and in yourself. We won’t invent fairy tales about being “the best in the world.” We’ll just say this: Madeira is an incredible place to learn, progress and go full adventure mode. 🌊

How do you build confidence on a canyoning tour?

Little wins stack up fast:

  • Listen to the briefing — knowing the plan calms the noise in your head
  • Trust the gear and the belay — that’s what the orange rope is for
  • Breathe at the edge, then weight the descender and go
  • Let us shoot the photos so you can stay present in the moment

Whether it’s your first canyon or you’re hungry for the next level, confidence isn’t a personality trait you either have or don’t. It’s something you practice — one abseil, one slide, one optional jump at a time.
