BOULDERING IN MADEIRA ISLAND
First of all, for the ones that aren’t familiar with the term or concept of Bouldering in the Climbing world .
So, bouldering is basically climbing on small rock formations, without the use of ropes, harnesses. However your encouraged to use your climbing shoes, chalk if needed and a crash pad to prevent potential injuries.
Now that you’re informed of the basics of Bouldering you should know that there are several spots to do it all around Madeira Island.
One of this top spots is in the Caniçal area, to access it you must hike for about 35 minutes on the recommended hikking route PR8 (Ponta de São Lourenço).
The bouldering area is located after a small beach. As soon as you get there you’ll encounter more than 10 boulder problems, each one has 5 to 8 different routes. It’s graded from v3 to v12.
The best time for this, is definitely in the morning because of the sun exposure and low tide, keep in mind that some boulders can have some sea water.
If possible don’t forget to take a crash pad and a partner to belay.
